School of Prayer

Teach us to Pray – Luke 11:1

“Teach us to pray” – Luke 11:1
Of all the things the disciples could have asked Jesus to teach them, their one request was that He teach them to pray.

In doing so, they acknowledged that Jesus’ inner life with the Father was the source of His outward life and ministry. They also recognized their own desire to grow deeper in this.

As part of Mosaic’s invitation to spiritual formation, the School of Prayer is here to guide you on your journey. We meet you where you are and help you take the next step toward a deeper relationship with God.

This can be visualized as a funnel: opportunities at the top are designed for larger groups with lower levels of participation and commitment, while deeper levels of participation, frequency, and commitment progress further down.

Learn to Pray

Praxis

Praxis offers opportunities to participate in prayer practices with others. Scripture Prayer is the anchor practice. We pray together using Scripture Prayer, prayer stations, and silence, and communion is celebrated at every gathering.

Praxis takes place from Monday to Thursday at 12:00 in person at the Chapel.

Week of Guided Prayer

The Week of Guided Prayer is designed to help you develop a daily rhythm of prayer. It’s often the first step in spiritual direction, where you experience what it’s like to discuss your life with the Lord with someone. A Week of Guided Prayer is a retreat that allows you to continue with your normal routine.

You are invited to dedicate 30 minutes each day to solitude and prayer during this week, and then have a daily conversation with a prayer guide about your experience. The prayer guide listens alongside the participant to God’s work in their prayer time, and based on that, suggestions are made for Scripture passages and/or prayer practices to focus on. The conversations are either in person at Mosaic or online.

The Week of Guided Prayer takes place four times a year.

Formatio Learning Experiences

Learning experiences such as Prayer Practices, Friendship with God, and Decision-Making are designed for larger groups and offer initial steps in responding to Jesus’ invitation to friendship with God.

These learning experiences aim to engage the body, soul, and mind, with content and exercises that seek to involve all these faculties.

Praxis Groups

Praxis Groups serve as an opportunity to practice praying together weekly with prayer stations, various prayer practices, silence, and communion.
You deepen your prayer practices by sharing something of your own experience and listening to others as well.

Groups meet at different locations and times throughout the week, either in person or online.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction offers you the opportunity to meet monthly with a spiritual director to talk about your life with the Lord. Aspects such as your image of God, prayer rhythms, calling, and decision-making often emerge.
Spiritual directors of the School of Prayer meet every six weeks for training and supervision. By listening to your experiences and asking reflective questions, the director “blows the dust from your eyes,” helping you become more aware of God’s work in your inner life and the invitations God is extending to you. A spiritual director is someone who feels called to this ministry, has been trained for it, and is under supervision.

Spiritual direction is one of the core elements of Mosaic’s School of Prayer and takes place either at Mosaic or online.
